System Safety Engineer is required to thoroughly understand, perform, and document the Safety Program activities as applied to conp s safety critical products, particularly the demonstration of safety of Positive Train Control systems to both internal and external customers. The applicant will be responsible for providing the system safety and assurance guidance to the development teams, supporting verification efforts, and compiling any of the components required for certification as defined by CFR 49 Part 236 Subpart H and I. Working in close cooperation with the other Safety & Assurance team members, Senior System Safety Engineer will be able to provide the necessary supervision and guidance to the junior engineers that may be assigned to a specific task, and make sure that schedule and/or budget constraints are complied with.
Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities:
Understand the processes of design, development, implementation, verification, validation, commissioning and support of safety critical electronic equipment in rail industry.
Conduct the Safety Program activities according to the applicable standards and guidelines, with minimal supervision, with or without help from junior staff.
Guide development teams toward product certification under CFR 49 Part 236 Subpart H.
Interface with external customers and regulatory agencies.
Travel up to 40-60% may be required.
BSEE/BSCS/BSCE or equivalent as a minimum;
Qualified engineering experience (confirmed by demonstrated recognized achievements) with safety critical electronic equipment in one or more of the following areas (in the order of precedence):
Positive Train Control;
Other Safety Critical electronic systems in Rail (CBTC, Solid State Interlocking, Processor Based Signaling, Automated Guided Transit, etc.);
Nuclear Power, Military, Aerospace, Automotive, Industrial Control, Medical devices;
Hardware design, software design.
Working knowledge of one or more of the recognized System Safety Engineering standards and guidelines such as MIL-STD-882, EN50126-129, ARP4761, DO178B or equivalents;
Proficient User of Microsoft Office (Word, XL, Powerpoint, Outlook);
Familiarity with commercial software tools for Safety Engineering analyses, requirements management, document control, configuration control, change/defect control, etc. is a plus;
Good oral and written communication skills
Ability and willingness to continuous education and performance improvement
Ability to work in a team, handle multiple tasks
