Functional Safety Engineer


Auburn Hills

This position leads the development, integration and maintenance of the functional safety operation of automotive roof system modules. The functional safety engineer will be responsible for developing and implementing safety related systems and processes according customer requirements and ISO26262.


Planning, Leading and Reporting

  • Develop and institute a functional safety development process and ensure that it is integrated into normal processes

  • Maintain an open issues list that is key for the successful tracking of issues from meetings as well as own activities.

  • Planning and implementation of safety relevant system development activities following ISO 26262 safety lifecycle and preparation of customized system safety plan.

  • Confirm and verify that safety plan and safety case as developed by Functional Safety engineers will ensure functional safety relevant deliverables are met in compliance with customer & internal company product & project gateways.

  • Planning and coordination of all necessary functional safety activities encompassing the life cycle of the product (functional safety leadership)

  • Execute and monitor project responsibilities regarding functional safety (safety plan)

  • Guide, coach and support implementation of functional safety requirements on all levels (system and sub-system) of the project (implementation support)

  • Development of the technical safety concept including system safety requirements in close cooperation with the ECU HW and SW teams.

  • Planning and organization of activities to maintain functional safety in production (e.g. EOL test, calibration process) and operation phases (e.g. field monitoring, modification process)

  • Create templates and guidelines as needed

  • Create and publish the reports regarding the functional safety status of the projects.

  • Assist the Functional safety manager with coordination and definition of the development interface agreement (DIA) RASIC.

  • Support sales teams with determination of ASIL level based on quote package requirements


  • Create functional safety documentation by creating and maintaining a safety case

  • Participate or lead the development of the hazard analysis and risk assessment (HARA), DFMEA and FTA

  • Conduct safety reviews and report the status when requested

  • Create or maintain all necessary work products (e.g. HARA, safety requirements) (functional safety work products)

  • Compilation of customer requirements in coordination with Functional Safety.

  • Compilation of ASIL dependent safety case.

  • Supporting the SW within system release recommendation / approval process (usage restriction)

  • Ensure products meet functional safety requirements as agreed with our customers and in relation to legal obligations as well as internal standards.

  • In accordance to ISO 26262, the functional safety engineer will ensure:

o Provides an automotive safety lifecycle (management, development, production, operation, service, decommissioning) and supports tailoring the necessary activities during these lifecycle phases.

o Provides an automotive-specific risk-based approach to determine integrity levels [Automotive Safety Integrity Levels (ASIL)];

o Uses ASILs to specify applicable requirements of ISO 26262 so as to avoid unreasonable residual risk;

o Provides requirements for validation and confirmation measures to ensure a sufficient and acceptable level of safety being achieved;

o Provides requirements for relations with suppliers.

o Planning and coordination of audits and assessments and definition of appropriate counter measures to fix identified safety relevant problems.


  • Specify safety verification and validation activities.

  • Audit sub-suppliers for Functional Safety compliance.

  • Expected short term troubleshooting and escalation management when necessary planning and coordination of verification and validation measures on system and vehicle level and close cooperation with system and vehicle integration and test department.

  • Prove the product robustness and reliability through agreement of Design Validation Plans and Report execution and reviews.

  • Responsible for verifying successful implementation of safety features and validating that required safety has been achieved.

  • Drive and audit the compliance to ISO 26262 through audits and team reviews according to the standard.

  • Responsible for following the main Quality Validation objectives and roadmap. The Quality Validation roadmap with long / midterm goals consists of the following elements:

o Empowered with data driven decisions

o Requirements management on every level

o Organizational development into a global company

o Clear and effective risk management strategy

o Centrally organized standardization of product verification and validation

o Globalization of quality policies and objectives within the group level

o Development and maturing of the product realization process to world class standard

Team support

  • Establish and maintain a safety culture

  • Supporting the customer safety managers with all appropriate efforts needed

  • Lead functional safety team with team effort and producing meeting notes and open issues lists.

  • Participate in functional safety team

  • Train future functional safety engineers in the organization

  • Proactively support both our customer and supplier quality assurance departments to enable component and product sign off agreements for engineering issues.

  • Directly engage with sub-suppliers to promote Functional Safety compliance

  • Support OEM audits, discussions, and decisions on ISO26262.

  • Support the system design engineer with analysis of system design changes on functional safety and ensure that functional safety is maintained on product level.

  • Support the functional safety manager to guide, coach, train, and support implementation of functional safety implementation on all levels (system and sub-system) of the project (implementation support)

  • Is recognized as safety expert and business partner and advises managers on product and process development and validation programs

  • Advise and develops engineers and complex teams in functional safety competences.

  • Adhere to all TS16949 procedures as related to component release

  • Supporting the system design within qualitative and quantitative System FMEA and FTA.


Education, Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree of Science in Electrical

  • 3 or more years of Automotive work experience

  • Experience or Advanced training for IEC 61508 / ISO 26262 is preferred

  • A Functional Safety certification is preferred

  • Project experience with development of safety related automotive systems and application of ISO 26262 is preferred

  • Experience with safety risk assessment tools, FMEA, Six Sigma & Lean Techniques, ISO/TS, ISO 26262, ISO 16949 and other safety related standards.

  • Experience with DOORs, Word, Powerpoint, Excel, ERP systems, requirements management systems is preferred

  • Experience and knowledge of requirements management tools (e.g. DOORS)

  • Experience in embedded software development and knowledge of quality systems is a preference.
